How it is charted

Every band is compared with its own recent median: what is above it arrived just now and is a drum, what the median holds is being played or sung. So the lanes are jobs, not frequencies — D the bottom of the mix, F the snare, K the hats and cymbals, J the tune over the top — and each keeps its own share of the chart, drums first.

The bottom lane follows the kick or the bass, whichever keeps better time in that part of the song. They move together in most worship music, and where the drums drop out of a verse the bass is still there marking it.

They join as the song does: drums from the start, cymbals when it picks up, the tune when it is in full voice. A figure that played here last bar is likelier to play here again, because music repeats and a chart worth learning repeats with it.

A big hit - a drum landing, the top of a phrase - asks for two keys at once, and three on Hard. A lane that has been firing without a break has to be louder than usual to fire again, so no one hand does the whole song.

A sustained voice becomes a hold: struck once, then kept down. Easy keeps to the beat and to what is loud; Hard goes down to sixteenths.
